Currency Exchange Trading FAQs

What is foreign exchange trading?

Forex is the market where one currency is traded for another. Currency traders speculate on the value of currencies and try to make money out of fluctuations. Pairs of currencies are traded against each other.

Why does currency fluctuate?

A huge variety of economic and political factors impact on the value of currencies. Some of the most important are:

  • Interest rates
  • Inflation
  • Balance of trade
  • Supply and demand
  • Economic growth
  • Foreign debt
  • Economic speculators

Can I exchange any currency?

In theory, yes. But the majority of transactions on the exchange market involve one of the big currencies from countries with low inflation, stable governments and respected central banks.

What strategies can I use to maximise profit?

  1. Trend following is the most popular long-term strategy in the forex market. It involves observing trends in currency trading and using this information to inform your own trading.
  2. The Commitment of Traders (COT) reveals the attitude of major traders towards various currencies, thus guiding your own decisions.
  3. The Currency Carry Trade is based on the fact that the interest rate differential of central banks has been identified as the most important determinant of currency trends.

Hi Rhonda, if you are a homeowner you shouldn't have any problem getting a loan for $4000. It is generally harder to get an unsecured loan once you are retired - but because you have a regular pension you may be eligible. Call into your bank for free advice.
