Debt collection letter
The first step in any debt collection situation is to send a debt collection letter. Send the original invoice along with this letter. When dealing with someone who owes you money it is important to give them the benefit of the doubt. They may not have received the invoice or may simply have forgotten to pay it. Bear this in mind when writing the letter and do not word it too strongly. Sending a letter is a cheap and fast way to collect a debt and a has a high success rate.
Debt collection agency
If you have not recovered the debt after sending a letter then it is worth considering outsourcing the task to a reliable collection agency. Debt collection agencies are experienced in collecting unpaid bills and debts and possess the know how to recover your money. They are also aware of the rules and regulations of debt collection which is important to avoid legal problems. These agencies can end up costing you extra money but they are often worth it.
Repayment plan
Work with the collection agency to negotiate a payment plan with the debtor that you are happy with. Make sure that the debtor agrees to pay a certain amount of the debt each week. If the debtor fails to make these payments then you may need to take legal action.
