Pet Insurance: what is and isn't covered?

Pet insurance coverage

As a result of high veterinary costs, pet insurance is becoming increasingly popular. Before you take out a policy, make sure you understand what is and isn't covered...

What is covered

Most pet insurance policies include accident and illness as standard cover. Some plans also cover emergency surgery and even identity chipping. You will be able to claim expenses against most kinds of treatment but this is not always 100% of the cost. To claim the full amount you will have to pay a higher premium. Some companies now offer routine care coverage which can include dental care, prescription drugs and alternative treatments such as physiotherapy.

What is not covered

Many pet insurance companies limit coverage for pre existing conditions such as heart conditions. There is normally a short period after a pet insurance policy is bought that you are unable make a claim. This is usually no more than two weeks. Pets that may have hereditary defects are also not covered. Most elective surgery such as fertility treatments and tail docking are not covered. Behavioural issues are not covered by standard plans.

Additional coverage and policies

Comprehensive pet insurance policies have high premiums but they will cover your pet for surgery, scans and x-rays, hospitalisation, vaccinations and annual check ups. This type of policy will cover every possible veterinary cost that you may have to spend on your pet.
